Founding Leadership
Founding Leadership is a nonprofit organization created to support and empower high school coaches as changemakers in schools.
Our direction and vision come from our founders, Jane and Johnny Roscoe. At every school where the Roscoes taught and coached, they were known for creating a family atmosphere. They put as much focus on personal growth and team development as they did on the Xs and Os of the game.
Our Story
As an award-winning AP US History teacher, Jane utilized her research and teaching expertise to develop motivation, organization and communication skills with their players and assistant coaches. Coach Roscoe knew that coaches outside of their program could benefit from the leadership lessons, and Founding Leadership was born.
In 2013, the Roscoes partnered with Founders Federal Credit Union and held their first conference at Founders Corporate Headquarters in Lancaster, SC. More than a decade later, Founding Leadership has connected with hundreds of coaches in the Carolinas and expanded to include the Xs & Os Clinic and a YouTube channel.
Founding Leadership believes that coaches are in a unique position to reach students, athletes and communities across the country. We strive to connect coaches with best practices and ideas to support them and their work on and off the field. We do that by gathering leaders at the top of their fields in coaching, business and government to share their successes and mistakes. We highlight the importance of reading and remind coaches that “Leaders are Readers.” Our goal is to be a forum for coaches to learn, grow and feel supported.
Meet Our Founders
Jane + Johnny Roscoe
Jane and Johnny Roscoe started teaching and coaching in public schools in 1971 and have been impacting football communities in South and North Carolina ever since. Working together, they garnered more than 300 wins and five state championships, one at Hartsville High School and four at Northern Guilford, where Coach Roscoe retired in 2015. As a passionate former AP US History teacher, Jane serves as a mentor to former students, players and coaches.
The Roscoes currently live on their tree farm in Jefferson, SC with their Boykin spaniel, Sport. They stay connected with their many football families and continue to work on how best to support coaches of all sports.

Our Partners
Our relationship with Founders Federal Credit Union dates back to the Roscoes’ time at Lancaster High School. That’s when Jane and Coach Roscoe first met Bruce Brumfield, Founders FCU president and CEO, who was an enthusiastic and committed booster of Lancaster High athletics. With a legacy of giving back to its communities, Founders became the perfect partner to help launch and support Founding Leadership.
From brainstorming to event planning to cooking an amazing shrimp boil, Bruce and his team have been there every step of the way. We can attest that the “Founders Difference” is real.
Newberry College became home to Founding Leadership Xs & Os Clinic and Leadership Conference in 2023. It was clear from the beginning, the partnership was a good fit. From President Maurice William Scherrens to football Head Coach Todd Knight, the people who make up Newberry College are passionate about their school, their community and what they do.
Whether you’re hanging out on The Portico of Holland Hall or running drills on Setzler Field, it is a special place where no one is a stranger.
